We made our debut in Cambodia last month when we brought Hamlet to the stage. The event formed part of the tour that will see the world-famous play performed in every country across the globe to mark the 450th anniversary of the playwright’s birthday. Organised locally in partnership with Amrita Performing Arts, Hamlet was held at the Royal University of Phnom Penh in a deliberate effort to make the play accessible to students.
Photographer Piotr Zaporowski was on hand to capture back-stage glimpses, glass reflections and audience perspectives in this stunning black and white photo essay.
This is the first part, comprised of mainly venue, audience and show photos. Part 2 with backstage reflections, can be found here.
Zaporowski is a photographer and storyteller who has followed social change in Asian and African countries since the late 1990s. Following the start of his collaboration with more than 40 United Nations’ agencies and international NGOs, he has been creating images documenting relief and development work and its impacts on people’s lives. His current assignments cover the survival of coastal forest communities in Southeast Asia, the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, and combating wildlife trade in Asean countries.
